Sustainability at Community Transit

Community Transit takes a holistic approach to sustainability, which involves protecting the environment, fostering economic stewardship, and providing for the well-being of others (employees and customers). This approach is in alignment with the industry standard, Three Pillars of Sustainability and supports the agency’s commitment to be environmentally, financially, and organizationally sustainable over time.

Doing our part

Promoting sustainability has always been a part of Community Transit's history. Every time you ride the bus, you're contributing to a cleaner, greener, environment. In response to the real effects of climate change in our communities, we are actively working to further reduce the impacts of our operations now and in the future.

Some sustainability actions we are taking include:

Sustainability Action Plan

To affirm Community Transit's commitment to sustainability, we are developing a 5-year Sustainability Action Plan to outline goals and actions we aspire to achieve, along with measures to gauge their completion. The Sustainability Action Plan will be completed at the end of 2024 for official adoption in early 2025.

What are the Three Pillars of Sustainability?

Venn diagram of the three pillars of sustainability: : 'Planet' (blue), 'People' (dark blue), 'Prosperity' (yellow). Intersections are labeled 'Bearable,' 'Viable,' 'Equitable.' The center reads 'Sustainable.

People

This pillar highlights the well-being of people (like our riders and employees) and communities by promoting equality, supporting education and healthcare, ensuring access to basic needs, and addressing issues like poverty and discrimination. The goal is to a society where everyone can live a fulfilling life.

Planet

This pillar focuses on caring for the environment in many ways, such as reducing pollution, utilizing renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, conserving natural resources like fresh water and forests, and protecting wildlife. The goal is to create harmony with the Earth and make sure future generations have a sustainable, vibrant planet to live on.

Prosperity

This pillar focuses on inclusive and sustainable economic growth by promoting job creation, ethical business practices, and environmentally-conscious decision-making. It also emphasizes the wise use of financial resources to ensure long-term success. This includes investing in sustainable industries that don’t harm or exploit people and making sure to be mindful with how we spend our money.
