Snohomish County, Wash. – Edmonds Community College students and staff will have a shorter walk to campus if they take Swift bus rapid transit. The new Swift College station opened today on southbound Highway 99 & 204th Street SW, just two blocks from the school.
“We are constantly seeking ways to expand and improve our transit network,” said Community Transit CEO Emmett Heath. “This new SwiftCollege Station will have an immediate benefit for college students and staff, as well as all 5,500 people who ride Swift every day.”
“We’re excited to expand our partnership with Community Transit,” said Edmonds Community College President Dr. Jean Hernandez. “We’re hopeful that the new Swift bus stop will allow our students, employees, and the community quicker and safer access to campus.
Heath, Hernandez and Lynnwood Mayor Nicola Smith formally cut the ribbon at 11 a.m. on the newest and final station on the Swift bus rapid transit line along Highway 99. Swift buses began serving the station shortly afterward. Here is a video of today's ribbon cutting ceremony.
About 1,500 people board buses each weekday at or near Edmonds Community College. Routes 115, 116 and 120 serve the campus directly and account for about 900 boardings each weekday.
About 600 people each weekday board the bus at the other two closest Swift stations near the college – southbound Highway 99 at 196th Street and northbound Highway 99 at 200th Street.
Edmonds CC students who commute on transit can get an ORCA “EdPass” for only $15 per quarter. This gives students access to explore the greater community at an affordable price. Information on how to get to Edmonds Community College by bus is online at www.communitytransit.org/EdCC [link archived].
With this station, Swift will have a total of 15 stops in each direction, plus terminals at Everett Station and Aurora Village. College Station was part of the original plan for Swift when it launched in 2009. The station was deferred until the City of Lynnwood extended 204th Street through to the college, which happened last year.
Community Transit plans a second Swift bus rapid transit line between Paine Field and Bothell, which will open in 2018 pending federal funding. Both Swift lines would intersect at Highway 99 and Airport Road.
